Spring 1 2024
And just like that we are over halfway through the year! Peace Class have been working very hard so far, but the hard work doesn’t stop now!
In Maths, we have been learning about Roman Numerals, place value, and the four operations. We then applied this knowledge to fractions. The pupils have learned to find equivalent fractions, to order them and to add them and subtract them. We also learned how to multiply a unit fraction and find fractions of an amount. Next term we'll be applying this knowledge of fractions to decimals and percentages!
This year in English, we have read Floodlands by Marcus Sedgwick, Room 13 by Robert Swindells and we just read The Adventures of Odysseus last term. We have been building our writing skills alongside our reading - we have learned to write short stories, to build suspense and to write to inform. Last term, everyone predicted and wrote the next chapter of Odysseus using our story mountain to guide them. We had lots of wonderful and entertaining narratives written in our WOW Books! Next term we will focus on some non-fiction writing, like writing an advert for a make-believe hotel that the children have already created (I think some of these hotels might be made of chocolate…)
In RE we started a brand new unit on Islam. I am proud to say that the pupils are very curious, while at the same time being courteous and respectful. We explored how followers of Islam worship, looking in particular at the Qur’an, mosques, prayer mats and Wudu. The pupils have taken their own experiences of their own faiths and have compared it to the new topic.
So far in History, we have learned about how the Second World War started, why lots of people were enamored by Hitler’s plans, and how normal people could become influenced by propaganda. Then, alongside our reading text of Odysseus, we learned about Ancient Greece. We explored how Ancient Greece became so influential, how Alexander Great conquered his empire, and how the other countries felt about this! As you can see, we also made some great Parthenon paintings!
At the end of the term, we all played GeoGuessr; it’s a great game where the pupils are placed somewhere in the world, and they must investigate the landscape around them to pinpoint where they are in the world. We had a great round where the pupils had to place which McDonald’s they were placed next to!
However, I reiterate, the hard work doesn’t stop here. Peace Class have come a long way but we have not finished the journey yet. I am looking forward to another great (half) term with the pupils!
